Over 100 participants walk and talk dune restoration in the picturesque Far North

The Dunes Trust fifth annual conference was a great success thanks to our wonderful hosts - the Taipa Beach Improvement Society, Taipa Area School and Northland Regional Council - our tenacious organising team, inspiring speakers and generous sponsors.

The conference brought together more than 100 people from all over New Zealand and provided opportunities to see, hear and discuss a range of current dune restoration topics including restoring dune systems and lakes, toheroa abundance, seed collection and pingao weaving. Conference proceedings will be available here in April.

Susanne Krejcek, the recipient of the 2012 Quinovic-sponsored Dune Restoration Trust Study Award, is working with the Department of Conservation, Ngaa Rauru and Ngati Apa near Wanganui conducting large scale field experiments to investigate competition between native and exotic plants. Her studies will contribute to best practice guidelines for dune restoration and management in New Zealand. Her work is complementary to the existing large scale backdune restoration project the Dunes Trust is currently working on supported by the Ministry for the Environment’s Community Environment Fund.
