Purpose of group: The purpose of Tauranga Bay Community Association is to protect the public amenity values and environs of Tauranga Bay for the benefit of present and future generations, liaising with local councils, iwi, DoC and other groups to protect the Tauranga Bay foreshore, estuary and sand dunes, and in particular, rare and endangered native bird species and their nesting sites.
About the group: In 2007 a group began working on CoastCare activities and protection of nesting dotterels. Funding was received from Far North District Council for bollards to keep vehicles away from the reserve’s beach frontage. Reshaping banks and planting of spinifex and pingao was then undertaken to help restore the banks and dunes. The group has erected fencing and signage to protect the New Zealand dotterel nesting sites on the sand spit. Members’ pest control work further protects the wildlife and they actively promote awareness of at-risk flora and fauna, as well as factors and activities that affect the environment, through social media and newsletters.
